Portland Trip - Day 2
We woke up around 7:30 am and went for a short hike before breakfast. We walked along the river, hoping to see the bridge up. We ran into a very nice man that told us that due to the high volume of rain, the bridge wasn't put up this year. But no matter, as we were looking out on the river we saw an otter. We noticed that there were a bunch of otter homes along the river. We were happy to meet our little otter friend and he was interested in us for a whole of three minutes. Then he quickly swam away. Kevin is still not convinced we really saw an otter... but it happened.
The otter was the highlight of my trip. He was gorgeous!
Kevin let me make the fire except we didn't have lighter fluid and the lighter itself was almost out of fluid... So I lit a candle and used the candle flame to light the cardboard we had brought to use as a fire starter. I got the wood to light a bit but it kept dying out... So Kevin had to get involved but we both agreed that I am getting better at building fires. :)
We made hash browns and scrambled egg burritos for breakfast. Not too shabby for a camping breakfast. Kevin cleaned up the tent while I made breakfast. We were all set to head out on the road again at 11 am. It was my turn to drive so I drove the 5 hours to Portland. We stopped once for gas in Oregon and it was so surprising but we cannot fill our own gas. An attendant takes care of it.
Before checking into our hotel we picked up a sushi lunch from SuBe Sushi & Sake Bar. We stayed at the Hilton and upon arriving they notified us that we had been selected to be upgraded to the hotel across the street to a nicer hotel room. It was all quite exciting. We checked in and went upstairs to shower because we both smelled like camp fire. We ate lunch and I took a quick nap while Kevin caught a few episodes of Big Bang Theory.
Around 6:30 pm we got up and got ready to explore Portland. We walked over to Andina's for upscale Portuguese tapas. The hostess told us it would be a 45 minute wait so we walked over to ben and jerry's for an ice cream snack. Plus it was super hot still around 8 pm. While we were eating our ice cream we got our call back. So really the wait was only 30 minutes.
We ordered the Tres Salsas con Pan, Conchas a la Parrilla, Palta Rellena de Cangrejo, and Sangria. My favorite was the Conchas a la Parilla, it was grilled diver scallops with a tamari-brown sugar butter sauce with crispy onions. Kevin really liked the Palta Rellena de Cangrejo (avocado stuffed with crab, topped with a poached prawn). It was also how we found out that Kevin is kinda allergic to avocados. I know......how sad. The sangria was really good and provided 4-5 glasses.
We made our way down burnside street toward 2nd avenue. We paid the $10 cover each to get into Dixie Tavern. I think that was our first mistake... As we made our way to the bar to get a drink, we were almost at the front when all of a sudden the bouncer made every one take a few steps back from the bar. I was so confused. A bunch of girls walked onto the bar and gave us the worse bar dance ever. The music was very country so we definitely didn't choose the right bar at all. We stayed for about 2 hours before we walked over to Voodoo donuts for a snack.
Kevin's favorite was the bacon maple donut. I liked the chocolate ring and the Triple Chocolate Penetration. Clearly I like chocolate and I love cocoa puffs! We purchased 6 all together and made our way home.
