Portland Trip - Day 1
For memorial weekend we decided to rent a car and drive up to Portland. We took Friday off, took our time waking up and made crab cake benedicts for breakfast. We were on the 101 for about 5 hours. It was a really scenic drive up the California coast.
We stopped in Eureka, CA for lunch at Shamus T Bones BBQ. It was pretty delicious, if you don't mind being stared at by stuffed deer. We ordered garlic fries, brisket sliders and $5 margaritas. Before we knew it we were on the road for another 1.5 hours.
Our camp spot was beautiful. We were camping in the Jedidiah Smith Redwoods, spot 55. It was right off the Smith River, the longest major free-flowing river in California and each camp spot has a trail leading to the river. As much as I loved our spot, came with a campfire log, I would have preferred spot 53. Note for next time.
Once we got to the camp spot we had to immediately explore. We did a very short hike to the water to get acquainted with the area. The bathrooms are really nice, with tiling, flush toilets, toilet paper and they also have showers available. We set up camp and Kevin began building a fire for dinner. We had brought marinated chicken that we had put together the night before and rice that was also cooked earlier that week. We BBQed the chicken and warmed up the rice and had a splendid dinner.
We had brought some vodka with us and made some mixed drinks while we watched the fire dance. It wasn't a clear night so we didn't see very many stars but it didn't take away from the beauty of the outdoors at all. We went to bed around 11 and it was a very sound sleep.
